This area has problems, and rather than run to the suburbs I choose to stay here and deal with them, even if it is frustrating. Neighbors who are in their 80's who have lived here for decades have thanked me for helping them, and said they had given up a long time ago.  A woman who lives behind me warned me about being in the alley after dark when I moved in a few years ago.  She now takes walks around the block because she is not as scared as she used to be.  I am not ashamed that my ultimate goal is to run off drug dealers and gangsta's, even if they did grow up here.  I am not ashamed that I have cleaned up an abandon house, and that I expect my neighbors to be up to code.  These aren't expectations I should feel guilty about. I support better schools, drug rehab programs, youth programs and everything that can be done to improve life for the poor, and as an Urban Pioneer I can help make all of that happen.  The appathy by people who have been here their whole lives is sad, but they aren't the people complaining about new comers.  Its the \"I don't like having to respect other people\" crowd that is complaining - the one who deal drugs, blast music at 1am, and don't want to get a job who are complaining. Home security, just with any other type of security, must be multi-layered. Think of a castle: moat, drawbridge, door requiring a battering ram, guards on the roof, etc. Your home's security configuration should be similar. People interested in infiltrating your home are looking to get in and out quickly, thus minimizing their chances of getting caught. More layers=more time. Basically, here's how I plan to do it:\u003CBR\/\u003E\u003CBR\/\u003E1. Perimeter fence. Height really doesn't matter, it's just another hurdle. Especially if the gate squeaks, then I can hear it.\u003CBR\/\u003E2. Motion-detecting lights. Always plant the seed of doubt. \u003CBR\/\u003E3. Metal security door, installed professionally. A well-installed security door is near-impossible to kick in. Bars on windows that are fully retractable from inside. \u003CBR\/\u003E4. Home security system.\u003CBR\/\u003E5. My yappy dog. \u003CBR\/\u003E\u003CBR\/\u003EAlso, always leave a radio or TV on when you're not home. Lights on always. A house should always look occupied. Keep your blinds shut when you aren't there, you don't want people able to look inside and see you're not home. Lock up your things outside, and for Christ's sake lock your doors. If you have a window within three feet of the door handle, wall it up. Too easy to break the window, reach in, and  twist the doorknob. \u003CBR\/\u003E\u003CBR\/\u003EBasically, if someone can get through all of this, by the time they get to me I will be in my basement, with my shotgun that I have had time to fully assemble and load.
