I saw the aftermath at around 6pm this evening but apparently an MPD vehicle got into a collision with a civilian vehicle. The civilian vehicle was completely destroyed. I heard second hand that an ambulance took people away. I'm not sure if the officer or the civilian were taken to the hospital but it was apparently pretty serious. Hopefully they will be alright. More details as they become available.

Friday Question of the Day
Friday's question of the day is honor of Columbia Heights Chic who got me thinking. What would you do if a homeless person set up camp on your stoop or your condo's stoop? Do you just call the cops? Do you confront the homeless person? It is a very sad situation for which I blame Ronald Reagan, but what can you do about it? I haven't seen many homeless people in Petworth or Columbia Heights. Have you? What would you do if there was a homeless person setting up camp on your block or condo?
Care to Speculate 11th St.
So there is a great space available to purchase just north of Wonderland on 11th St. So what do you think it is going for? What type of business would fit in nicely here? How much would you have to sink in to renovate and make it respectable? I really think 11th Street is a phenomenal block. I'd love to be able to put in a book store but damn, how many books would you have to sell to make it profitable?

This house is ridiculously awesome on Park Road right east of Red Rocks. It is huge. Apparently it was asking almost $1.4 mil on the sign out front but that was whited out. So what is it going for now? Do you think this mansion can go that high? I think it is absolutely badass and if I ever hit the power ball I may but a serious bid on it.

New Hampshire House Seems to be Selling
So have you walked by the New Hampshire House located on the 3500 block of NH? In almost every window facing the street it looks like they are under contract. The sign advertises Luxury condos with parking in the Mid-200s. Is that a good deal? Has anyone checked out these condos? What's the verdict?
I've solved our garbage problem
So it has finally occurred to me how to solve our garbage woes. People seem to feel very comfortable throwing their garbage in tree boxes. (A guy in Shaw even has a whole blog about it.) So the solution is easy. Why don't we just paint tree box scenes on the garbage cans? At the very least I think it would be a fascinating social experiment. Pretty clever huh?
Reason #96 I love our neighborhood
How is possible to live right in the middle of the city and sit outside on your porch and listen to the crickets? How is that possible? To make things even better, a neighbor across the street came out to sit on his porch and listen to the baseball game on his radio. I swear sometimes I feel like I can understand people reminiscing about the 50s. Sitting on the porch, drinking a beer, listening to a baseball game and with the crickets chirping in the background. And there aren't even any mosquitoes tonight!

A New Feature: Dear PoP
From time to time I get letters asking a variety of questions. So from time to time, when given permission, I will share them with you.
Dear PoP,
This whole hearing gunshots thing -- if I dwell on it, I start to become
uncomfortable in my own home--especially if I am alone. I feel like the
only other choice I have is to ignore the thought of it and hope I am
never in any way involved.
Sometimes, I wonder if I should just get out of here -- tear up my lease
and go back to the 'burbs where it's "safe." But I've only been here for
a few months, and everything I enjoy doing on my free time is here.
I feel like someone is going to tell me I'll grow a "thick skin" after a
while...
I realize crime can and does happen anywhere, but the prevalence and
vicinity to my home has me worried. I feel like there are areas I must
avoid, behaviors I must avoid (e.g., walking down GA Ave after dark). I
also feel I have to be careful how I look at people (e.g., while at a
stop light or on my front porch) to be sure I don't accidentally upset
someone. There seem to be so many ticking time bombs around here.
What exactly is your take on all of this? You've lived here for a
while...do you just accept that it (i.e., crime) happens and hope it
never happens to you? Do you do more than hope? Are there things you do
to ensure your safety? Reasons why you feel safe? Do you feel safe?

What you are feeling is totally normal. Believe me, there have been times when I've been frightened as well. But those recent gunshots are pure randomness. When I lived in Woodley Park next to the zoo, there were frequently police helicopter circling overhead. A good friend of mine, who by the by, is in the Special Forces right now, was mugged in north Cleveland Park. I truly believe that Petworth is among the safer neighborhoods in the city. Why?
Because neighbors look after one another here. You have absolutely nothing to fear while you are on your porch. When I first moved here I was known by some drug dealers as the crazy white boy because I would sit on my porch and talk to every one who passed by at all hours of the day or evening. I'm not necessarily advocating that but it is important that you get to know your neighbors and become part of the community. People watch each other's back here.
But it is true that there are drug dealers. And for the most part it is the drug dealers who face the dangers of gunfire. Now of course there is always a little risk living in a city. When you live in a city there are precautions that should be taken. Personally I don't walk on Georgia Ave. or many other streets past a certain hour. That is just my own comfort level. But all things considered we are in a beautiful reality.
So how does one feel safe? Only you can answer that. Some people like to get a dog. Some have an alarm system. Some don't walk the streets past a certain hour. But I really believe the best way to feel safe is to become a part of the community. Talk to all of your neighbors. Talk to people in the street. Attend community events. Street smarts are learned. If you are walking around late at night don't have ear phones in, don't talk on your cell phone, be aware of your surroundings and walk confidently. There are precautions to be taken but don't obsess about it. It is important to find your own comfort level. By and large you are living in a safe and welcoming community. Enjoy it!

A Conundrum or Mind My Own Business?
I went to El Limeno tonight to get some of my favorite tacos. The place was, sadly, dead empty. Except for two patrons sitting at the bar. Well, the two patrons were cursing like sailors. Not in a gratuitous way but merely as a matter of fact. So it got me thinking, in a sit down restaurant you usually don't expect to hear the f word dropped every few seconds. But then again the place was dead empty. So does it really matter? Is cursing loudly bad for a restaurants business? We are not talking about a pub here. Should the owner have said something? I'm really conflicted about this. What do you do when you have patrons cursing loudly in your restaurant?

House of the Week
Located on NH just south of the Petworth metro. This house is a beauty. Great front door, nice bay window, and great front porch. It looks like the house next door is being completely renovated as well. Then I took note, it looks like a ton of the houses on that block are getting renovated. Stay tuned...
ANSWER Aftermath
On my walk to the metro this morning I encountered some folks from the DPW who were tearing down those damn ANSWER poster graffiti. Forget the fine, the ANSWER people should be forced to remove the posters instead of our DPW folks who surely have better things to do. I spoke and watched for a few minutes with the workers and let me tell you it is not easy to remove them. This whole thing is a shame, a pure shame.

Props to the MPD
A few weeks ago I met one of the MPD officers who patrols our neighborhood. I only met him briefly. So it was much to my surprise when I was walking down New Hampshire last weekend when I saw about 6 cops and one perp handcuffed on the sidewalk. I thought it would be a good idea to walk by the scene very briskly. Well the MPD officer who I met a few weeks ago was there and he calls out hello. It was really funny. Right in the middle of what looked like a very serious bust, the officer greets my like it is perfectly normal day. Well, much respect to those guys. If we get more new officers patrolling the beat like him we will certainly be moving in the right direction of community policing.
Random PoP Observation
I saw the Bourne Ultimatum last night at the China Town theater. Nice theater by the by. Tickets are now $10.50. And if you want extra cheese on your $6 nachos well that will cost you another $1.50. Damn.
But that is not the random PoP observation. The Bourne Ultimatum, which was pretty good, is an action adventure flick - nothing more nothing less. Well, near the end of the film there was a young woman crying hysterically seated right behind me. Not like a tear rolling down the cheek but full throated sobbing. At the Bourne Ultimatum. I mean it wasn't Sophie's Choice or anything. I'm not judging, I'm just observing.

Has Wonderland Changed?
I hadn't been to Wonderland Ballroom, located at 11th and Kenyon, on a Sat. night in quite a while. I'm not saying it was bad, but it was definitely different than what I remembered. It used to be filled with alternative types. But last night, I'm telling you, the upstairs was filled with a sort of flashback to the that preppy 80s period. I remember that period of popped collars and bad music quite well. Many women were wearing like ballroom gowns. At Wonderland. What's going on here? What happened to the PBR crowd? I don't like to judge but well, it gives me pause. Is this a new scene? Has Wonderland on Sat. nights changed? What's going on?
El Rinconcito Deportivo
I've always wanted to check out this spot located a few stores down from Wonderland. This is the place that has a soccer ball as the "o" in Deportivo. Right on. So after stumbling out of Wonderland around 1 this place was doing a brisk business with primarily Hispanic patrons. Some friends and I had a chicken dish which was superb. It is nice to know you can have this quality food after hitting Wonderland.
ABC Science Teachers
Welcome Orilena, Lindsay and Thajilah three science teachers for the new ABC charter school on Upshur St. I briefly checked out their open house. The building still needed some finishing touches but all in all it looked amazing.
So after briefly talking to the teachers, I learned that the school is for grades 6-8. Also, science and language arts are taught in English while math and social studies are taught in Spanish. About 50% of the students don't speak Spanish as their primary language. School starts Monday, so best of luck to the teachers and students.

How come this house hasn't sold yet? I love this house. It is located right off of New Hampshire on 7th Street. It is a very good looking house as you can tell. The flyer says it has 5 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. Is the asking price of $599,900 insane?
Cop at the Heights
I saw a cop positioned right outside the Heights the other evening. I was happy to see him there. So what do you think: Do the new restaurants opening up in Columbia Heights have an arrangement with the Metropolitan Police Department for regular patrols? Have you noticed more police around the Petworth/Columbia Heights night spots?

It's Come to This...
Well, this is the one room in my house I've had renovated. As I haven't got my new camera yet, all there is, is this small photo from my phone. This is what you guys have forced me to do. Send more renovation photos please! I of course didn't redo the bathroom on my own. The contractor convinced me to spend $1000 bucks more for a whirlpool bath which I have used all of once. And then I had to take a shower. Anyway, send more renovation photos or I'll be forced to show you my kitchen...

Gunfire in Petworth last night?
From the Petworth Yahoo Listserv comes this disturbing report:
"I can tell you what it was, as we saw it happening. The 10 - 20 shots in rapid succession? That was 2 teenagers riding bikes down the alley. (That's the large square alley behind the Safeway. They were riding along the part behind 10th St. that runs N-S.) One had a gun that he was shooting into the air. It was a handgun. We could see the muzzle flashes.
We called the police. I don't know if they responded, as the kids were on bicycles heading out of the alley. We did give a description and tell the police which way they were heading until the got out of sight."
Hmm, maybe the Petworth soccer team won an important match?

What's It Time For?
Well, I've been avoiding blogging about this for a while now but a kind reader sent in a great photo. The reader writes:
"This sign is on 11th St - kinda freaks me out, but not sure why."
So here goes: 11th Street between Wonderland and Red Rocks is home to a very curious storefront. I think you can tell from the photo but it reads "Up You Might Race...It's Time". I gulp every time I walk past it. So a few questions naturally come to mind, first and foremost - what the hell is this? Is this group active or is it a blast from the past? I think I've seen one person walk through a side door once. It always seems to be closed. So is this for real? Does it make anyone else a little uncomfortable when they walk by. In all honesty, I think it is the coolest sign in town...if it doesn't mean anything. But if it is for real, well for once, I don't know what to say.

10 Years in DC
I can hardly believe it but August marks 10 years since I moved to the District. And it has been almost five years living in Petworth. So much has changed, it boggles my mind. So what has changed:
Adams Morgan changed from an eclectic scene of bars and restaurants to a watered down version of itself. The "new" Adams Morgan is without a doubt the U St. neighborhood. I remember going to the State of the Union on U. Street to listen to live tunes 8 or 9 years ago and when the show was over you jumped into a cab (when you could find one) because there was nothing else to do (with the exception of Ben's Chili Bowl of course).
When I first moved to DC I pretty much rotated between Adams Morgan and Cleveland Park. At the time Nanny O'Briens was, in my opinion, the greatest Irish bar in the District. Now it is under new ownership and it has lost its individuality, it almost feels like a chain. As a matter of fact, Cleveland Park itself seems to have lost some of its luster. In its main strip of stores, there are a number of empty ones most noticeably there is a big gap where the McDonald's used to be, which has been vacant for quite some time now. I always used to secretly pine for Cleveland Park. But I can honestly say Columbia Heights/Petworth is far superior today.
As for changes in Petworth itself over the last five years well they have been substantial as well. For starters, cab drivers now know where Petworth is located. Obviously there are a lot more dining and drinking options. But even more interesting is the fact that there is also a lot more diversity. Petworth has one of the few mixed communities of White, Black and Hispanic residents that exist harmoniously. It is really obvious when you go grab a drink at Temperance.
Well, that is enough of my observations. What have you noticed that has changed (both positive and negative) about DC or Petworth/Columbia Heights since you've been here?

It looks like the Oromo Center on Upshur is getting a needed facelift. Anyone know what is going on here? Is it the Center getting upgraded or is another business moving in? What is the Oromo Center any way?

An Update on P.o.P. Renovations
First off, thanks to all for your kind words. Well, there are a lot of exciting happenings coming around the corner. I have finally identified a Digital Camera to purchase. Secondly, thanks to Emily for helping me with the P.o.P. t-shirts which I should get my first look at tomorrow. Another great thing about Domku is the art that they display. I really like this new batch. And for the record, the service I received on Sat. was exceptional. Check out the walls the next time you stop by.
EL Haynes Charter school Georgia and Otis
Another Charter School is coming to Petworth. I heard someone register an interesting issue about this particular location. It is located not too far from a strip club and a liquor store. Should make for some interesting extracurricular activities, no?
Lots of Progress
There is a whole row of rowhouses being renovated on 8th Street. It looks like they are making nice progress. This is the view from the alley.
Sweet Kitchen Renovation
This is a beautiful professional renovation. The owner tells me that he doesn't know the details but that some parts were imported from Brazil. I think the slate floors are particularly cool.
Dept. of Corrections?
A reader wrote me to express his displeasure with the looks of the new Target going in at Columbia Heights. He writes:
"The new Target to be completed in Columbia Heights looks like a jail, an imposing brick wart, probably designed for another site to be shoe-horned and plopped into that space. Chosen without regards to the community or surrounding architecture, It’s design selection was unskilled; lacked insight, foresight and taste. I couldn’t even sleep one night thinking about how ugly it is. Although I can’t wait for the shopping/ Target to be there, who ever made their money should pay those who pass by for having to look at it. Even with the proposed banners and lights to be put up, I see the pig, not the ribbon."
Personally, I don't think it so bad. What do you guys think?

Columbia Heights News reports that Julia's Empanadas is coming to Park Triangle in Columbia Heights. They say Julia's will be located between Citibank and Rita's Ice. This is fantastic news!
Woman Hit By Train at Petworth Station
Holy cow, I missed this in the Express yesterday.
"METRO IS WARNING commuters to expect significant delays during the afternoon rush on the Green Line going through the Georgia Avenue-Petworth station — where a woman was struck by a train at 3:42 p.m. Trains are sharing the same track."
That is wild because when I came home at 6:30 pm there was no delay nor any sign that someone was hit by a train. Really tragic, but man do I give credit to metro on this one.

Friday question of the day
So we've talked a lot about 11th Street lately. 11th St. is home to some of my favorite places, Columbia Heights Coffee, Red Rocks, Wonderland, 11th St. Deli and soon home of the Warehouse. I mention this because the street itself reminds me an awful lot of Upshur St. Both streets seem to have a similar mix of residential rowhouses peppered with businesses. So my question is: Does Upshur St. have the potential to become the next 11th St.? Do we want Upshur to become like or attract the same businesses as 11th St.?
Historical Comparision
Here is a photo from 13th St. showing an original third floor extension made out of brick. I'll tell you why I like this one. Even though it still "sticks" out it has all the surrounding details that the other houses have, it is just one floor higher. If you look at the roof (my housing vocab. is slim) the border is exactly like the neighboring houses. Hmm, so I wonder why this house was built with an extra floor if it was built during the same time period as the 2 level houses. Any ideas?
Is This Better?
Continuing our discussion of rowhouse renovations and additions, allow me to add the above photo to the discussion. This house is gigantic (I know they've been working on it forever). Obviously you can see from the photo that the third addition is sold brick. But, personally I still think it sticks out. Definitely much better than some we've seen. Why can't they just add an extension to the back and leave the damn third floor alone? (Ed note: the previous question is rhetorical). Seriously what do you think of the brick addition?

Another Shout Out to Mayorga
I briefly mentioned Mayorga coffee located in the Tivoli on Park Rd and 14th St but I don't think it has received enough attention. This place is ridiculously good. You can kind of see from this picture it has vaulted ceilings on the ground floor. And this place is huge. There is a lounge adjacent to the ordering area with wifi and big flat screen tv. Plus upstairs it has a super cool bar. This place is honestly insane. It looks so modest from the outside but they have truly taken advantage of the Tivoli's architectural features. I talk a lot about good vibes and atmospheres of restaurants/bars. At Mayorga as soon as you enter the doors you take a big sigh of relief it is so pleasant. If you haven't checked it out yet, it is an absolute must!
Random PoP Observation #27
So I was at CVS today and there was a huge line. Why? Because there was a lady who was paying for her purchase with a check. A check, like it was 1974. And she was rather young too. If the lady was elderly I wouldn't say a thing. But her paying by check, knocked the CVS world off its axis. Aren't "check/debit cards" free from banks now? If she wrote a check then surely she could have a free debit card. Am I crazy? Well, I bet she has one hell of an 8-track collection...

This is another do it yourself job. I can't believe people have the skills to do this themselves. I can barely boil water. The reader writes:

Neat Neighborhood Find: The Hitching Post
I have been meaning to write about this fantastic restaurant bar/restaurant for ages. Located at 200 Upshur St, right across the street from El Limeno, The Hitching Post is that intimate neighborhood bar you have been looking for. It probably seats 25 on a very good day. But what really sets this place apart is the atmosphere. I had the opportunity to chat with the owners who were as nice and welcoming as you could ever wish for. (Ed note: I will profile them for an upcoming "profile of a Petworthian") It turns out the Hitching Post is celebrating its 40th anniversary! It is an absolute must that you check out their juke box. If you like Charlie Bird, Vic Damone, Marvin Gaye, Mingus, The Four Freshmen - you are really in for a treat. The beers are cold and the portions are gigantic. If you are on a diet it is probably not the place for you. Even if you are not hungry it is a great place for a cold beer. The conversations are always lively. This is the "Cheers" of Petworth. There is no pretension here. There are cold Budweisers, sports banners, good conversations and a great juke box. What else do you need?
A side note: I spoke with two nice guys from the neighborhood who tipped me to a rumor that an Ethiopian restaurant is in the works for Georgia Ave. and Allison St. stay tuned...
Garden of the Week
They are definitely going with the wild flower theme here. I was taken by the statue of Zeus and a maiden (the maiden is covered by flowers but she is quite alluring.)

According to ABC 7, the group received 64 citations for the posters on Monday, with a $150 ticket attached to each. All told, ANSWER must remove the signs in 72 hours or face at least $9,600 in tickets. It’s unclear exactly what the charge is, that the posters can’t be so hard to remove, or that they can’t be posted on street lights and traffic boxes.

No Roger, No Rerun, No Rent!
Now that was a protest I could get behind. Remember the classic show "What's happening now"? That was a proper protest. There were people holding placards and there was no damage to public parks. And in the end they got Roger and Rerun back in the building. Alright back on point, thanks to a reader for alerting me to the fact that every single lamppost in Grant Circle has been plastered with protest signs.
The reader writes: "ANYWAY. I got home from a week of vacation and noticed that all around Grant Circle, on every single light post, are bright yellow anti war posters. Now, I'm totally against the war, but I'm also against organizations littering all over public property and when I called ANSWER, the sponsor of the anti war march, she told me that they were allowed to do that because light posts were public property, that i was wasting her time and she hung up on me."
I have to say that is pretty messed up. We are not talking about the war itself. We are talking about the fact that these signs are a blight. They also have serious adhesive an will not be easily removed after Sept. 15th. So what the hell? Do we have to sacrifice Grant Circle in the name of "free speech"? Do you think the organizers will remove these stickers after the march? I am sure there has got to be a better way. What do you think?

Friday question of the day
We've had discussions about Domku, Red Rocks and Colorado Kitchen and one of the common themes, besides that I love all three of them to varying degrees, is that sometimes the service has been less than optimal. But since they are all unique, local business, in my opinion, filling a desperately needed service in sit down local dining; isn't it worth supporting them even if at times the service can be slow? If we don't support them and God forbid they were to go out of business, do you think other restaurants would take their place or would they just end up boarded up or take out joints? Won't their success contribute to other similar establishments opening up nearby? Again, in my opinion I believe they have markedly improved each of the blocks where they are located. So, shouldn't they be patronized for their "pioneering" spirit?
Sweet Renovation Vol. 2
Check out this awesome kitchen sent in by Garrett in Columbia Heights. The extra beauty of this one was that Garrett was able to do the work himself! I'd say he did a damn good job. What do you think?
Garrett writes:"Details: The space was a nasty large bathroom addition when we bought the house and the exterior walls were made of load bearing brick. We tore off the brick and rebuilt the addition out of wood. The kitchen's got semi concealed Lutron QED electric roller shades for all of the windows, all Bosch appliances except for the Jenn-Air French door fridge, maple cabinets from Brookhaven, basalt stone countertops, floating cork floor with radiant hydronic heat below, pop-up mixer cabinet, pneumatic sink top disposal switch, low voltage lighting, speakers hooked into sound system, Eagle windows & doors, & cell phone charging station, etc... The paint is "Reflecting Pool" by Behr. In this phase of the renovation we also added a powder room and a spiral stair to a new roof deck above the kitchen.
Cost: It's hard to quantify the cost since we did 95% of the work ourselves, but the street value for a good GC to do the job was probably $150,000. We didn't spend nearly that much."

Whatever Happened to Grass? Part 2
Ok, far be it from me to judge, but look at this corner "park" between The Heights and Tivoli in Columbia Heights. There are a few trees but it is mostly filled with gravel. I think Petworth has a number of awesome green triangular parks that look fantastic. One of those in this location would improve the look 100%. What do you think about the gravel replacing good old fashioned American grass?

Sweet Renovations Vol. 1 - After

God Does Exist
Holy cow, the gas station at 15th and U has Slush Puppies. I haven't had one of the years in years. I thought for sure they went out of business. They are the gold standard of sugary frozen drinks. Slush puppie would be to Slurpie as Chateau Neuf de Pape would be to Mad Dog. (Ed note: I am assuming Chateau Neuf de Pape is good wine because it is from a Beastie Boys song.) Point is Slush Puppies are damn good and I can't believe they still exist. I highly recommend Blue Raspberry.
