Remember Community Policing

Ah, that was a nice idea. It was such a lovely thought. The police were going to be walking the beat saying hello to the neighbors, getting to know folks, etc. etc. Yeah, well it hasn't happened in Petworth as far as I am concerned. Now you all have to understand, I am not a normal fellow. I walk for hours and hours just to walk. I walk all around Petworth, Columbia Heights and U Street. I observe, I look at cool houses, I look at cool flowers, I talk to cool people. And you know how many cops I have seen "walking the beat"? Two! And that is two who were walking together, not two separate occasions. So I ask you, Chief Lanier, Mayor Fenty, what gives? Where are these foot patrols and community policing initatives you promised us? I believe I'm going to have call bullshit on this one.

Fellow Petworthians and residents of the District, is it just me? Have you seen foot patrols? If they send an officer to an ANC meeting I don't exactly call that community policing.

Developer chosen for Old Soldiers Home

Paul Schwartzman writes in a small piece in the Post that a North Carolina based builder has been chosen to develop 77 acres of the Old Soldiers Home. It plans to build a small hotel, a supermarket, condominiums, market rate rental apartments and 300 units of affordable housing.

Pretty exciting stuff although I hope it isn't too congested a la certain areas of Columbia Heights. But a new supermarket should make people happy. Dare I say Whole Foods may be on its way?

Thanks to a tip from a reader I was alerted to all the new blue Petworth signs around town. They are awesome, a good sign that we haven't been forgotten from the powers that be. The signs show where the Old Soldier's home is located, the metro etc. Good stuff.

Gentrification discussion in Petworth

There is an enthusiastic discussion going on here, on gentrification in Petworth. Ah the inevitable gentrification discussion.

I'll just throw in my two cents on their discussion: some of them are idiots. I feel as though most of those people have never even visited Petworth let alone live here. They describe Petworth like it is some kind of crime infested slum. Ha! They couldn't be further from the truth. We have a beautiful community filled with hard working mostly middle class good people. Most folks don't realize that the majority of homes in Petworth are owner occupied. That means people have a vested interest in their community. Petworth is a gem. Sure there are some flaws, which I even discuss from time to time. But the fact that people talk about Petworth like it is a dangerous slum is simply ridiculous. We are very lucky to live here. All of us, old timers, new comers, immigrants, citizens...it is this combination of folks who love their community, which makes it such a special place to live. But I think my thoughts are pretty clear on this matter.

Petworth fares well in Washington Post's mega real estate edition

It arrived. For those who enjoy reading about real estate, like myself, we look forward to the Washington Post real estate chats every other Friday. We also look forward to the Sat. Post real estate section. Well, once a year the Post releases a "Mega" real estate section. This to me, is like when I was kid waiting fot the Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Edition to arrive. God I've really turned into a loser but we've already covered that. At any rate, according to the Post in 2006 Zip Code 20011 had 645 home sales (the most of any zip code in the city) with a median purchase price of $404,000. This is an increase of $29,000 from last year which is an 8% increase.

Reporter Julia Feldmeier wrote the overview of DC in the special section and in the last paragraph she focuses on Petworth:

"You can get a lot more house in Petworth than you can almost anywhere else in the city, except across the river," said Eileen Garner, a Coldwell Banker agent. "So you have some people cashing in their condos down in Dupont and buying out here where they have a very low mortgage because of what they earned on their condo. You also have first-time buyers that can actually get a house with three or four bedrooms in the low $400,000 range."

Um, who the hell is walking down the street and stops and says I'm going to spray paint some grafitti here? Then he says, I wonder what I'll write, maybe - gang letters, or a sports team I like, or a girl I dig, no I think I'll write Pear.

Well who doesn't like pears? I just would love to know the thought process that went into this graffiti. Anyway, I'm going to eat a pear now - so maybe we can see it like a public service announcement...

Friday question of the day

We've touched on the housing situation in Petworth but what about the condo situation. As we all know the awesome condos being built above the metro will probably be finished in a year or so bringing our eagerly anticipated Mocha Hut... Will the condo market be able to support this addition? Will the condos sell with all those condos being built in Columbia Heights and U Street as well? I'd imagine the developer must be sweating a little bit. Thoughts?

Do bourgeois hipsters love Petworth?

I read a very interesting article in the New York Observer about hipsters being proud of living or claiming to live in rough neighborhoods of Brooklyn. You can read it here.

I was talking to someone last night who said many "hipsters" from Mt. Pleasant have moved to Petworth. I am by no means a hipster, I am very hip mind you just not a hipster, but anyway I am very proud to live in Petworth for the positive attributes - beautiful neighbors, trees, houses etc. Are there people who moved to Petworth because it is "hip" to live in Petworth? Or is it a financial thing? I know I couldn't afford to buy in many other neighborhoods 4 years ago. So talk to me about hipsters in Petworth. What is it exactly about Petworth that attracts hipsters?

Why is there so much hatred toward Muriel Bowser?

As I have said many times I haven't made up my mind yet how I will vote, or for that matter who I will endorse. But a friend of my wrote me today asking a very interesting question: Why did Muriel Bowser win her ANC seat so convincingly?

The above is from the DC election website. It seems Muriel Bowser won her ANC seat with 601 votes and only 70 votes were written in against her. It appears noone even officially ran against her. So where is the all hate from?

Unfortunately, I use a cell phone camera and couldn't capture all 6 signs that were displayed on this poor house's front yard. God knows what they had to deal before they came up with this solution. A beautiful sign though, no?

Fenty vs. Cropp again?

Have you seen the recent articles on Ward 4 councilmember endorsements? Well combine that knowledge with the recent articles about fundraising for the seat. What do you get? Fenty vs. Cropp round two. What we see is that those organizations supporting Muriel Bowser also supported Mayor Fenty for his successful mayoral race. On the other side we are seeing those organizations supporting Michael Brown also supported Linda Cropp's unsuccessful mayoral candidacy. Those fundraising for Muriel Bowser and Michael Brown also follows a similar Fenty-Cropp pattern. Am I reading too much into this? Are we seeing another Fenty vs. Cropp race?

What kind of house can you get for a half million bucks in Petworth?

Take a look at this link about a guy who's thinking about buying a house in Petworth. It is a pretty funny post where you can click on a link where he gives a video tour of the house. It looks like a nice house. Half a million bucks though that is wild. It got me thinking, which I know can be a dangerous thing. But as I've been interviewing prospective ward 4 councilmembers, many of them have brought up the affordable housing issue. I have to admit I haven't given it too much thought as I already live here. So I'm just wondering: number one is there still affordable housing left in Petworth and number two aren't we supposed to be happy when property values increase?

It is very rare that Fox 5 news and I are on the same wavelength but today we were. After a long day of golf I wanted to put some pictures up of Temperance Hall. Well, I learned that Fox 5 had just preceded me. Unfortunately the light was streaming in the windows so I couldn't really get good pictures. But what I can say, without reservation, is that Temperance Hall is the greatest bar in Washington, DC! Now, I say this for a few reasons. First of all, if you are a Petworth resident, it is like going to your living room. Most of the patrons are Petworth residents and there is just a really chill vibe in the air. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly to me, the bartender Sott had played a couple of Drive By Truckers songs. That in and of itself is worthy of a hight rating. Also I had a grilled cheese sandwhich with mustard, tomato and french fries for $5 which was fantastic! But honestly as you can see in the picture there is a pool table, chandeliers, stained glass, and really really good people and food. What more could you ask for?

Friday question of the day

All this talk about the Ward 4 council election has got me thinking. Since many of the candidates are using their ANC service as a springboard to the council I figured it may be worth investigating. ANC Representatives: Do you know what they do? Are they visible in your neighborhoods? I remember when I was a renter I could not care less but now that I am landed it seems like I should know what they are up to. A few months ago I was very pleased about my ANC SMD 4C10 Commissioner. In January he handed out a newsletter with lots of great information and then...nothing. I haven't heard a peep since. Now, I know that the chair is supposed to be fantastic because I hear people talking about his good work all the time. I'm talking about our local reps. Yeah, I know I should go to the meetings but neither do you so stop judging me. Now, back to judging our local ANC reps and the Friday question of the day - Do you know what they do, and if so are you pleased with your local ANC rep?

I have to admit I had been pretty pessimistic of late because it seemed every time I walked by there was no progress. I am happy to report today there was an army of folks at work over there. One sure sign of movement are the windows that are going in. Also I spotted a front door. Any guesses as to what they'll put this on the market for when finished?

This is the tie and suit I wore walking home from the metro. Now tell me if you feel or have felt the same way. I despise wearing a suit from the Petworth metro. Why? Because I feel like I could not possibly stick out more. I am 99 times out of 100 the only person wearing a suit. I feel like an idiot. So tell me, am I insane? Is it just me? Ladies and gentlemen please tell me, do you feel funny wearing dress clothes home from the metro? I'm just curious is all.

H Street corridor vs U Street corridor

A friend of mine lives in the H Street corridor and naturally is eager to patronize their local pubs. I had the opportunity to join him last weekend. Now, many know that H Street and U Street share similar backgrounds in that both were ravaged during the 1968 riots. Let's just say that U Street has rebounded a bit quicker. Now, don't get me wrong the bars themselves on H Street are fantastic, they have almost every variety, chill, sports, martini, crazy themes etc. The problem that I had is that H Street in and of itself just isn't a pleasant street to hang out on. I have no doubt that in 5 years it will be kickass but at the moment it has a little ways to go. Quite frankly it feels like some of the more unsavory parts of Georgia Ave. They both are going to improve it is just going to take time. Now if I lived in the H Street neighborhood I would be totally stoked. It is just that U Street is easily five years ahead of H Street. Also, if I lived in U Street/Columbia Heights/Petworth area I frankly don't think it is worth the long journey to get to H Street, NE. One of the primary differences and benefits of U Street is that it has a fantastic restaurant scene which doesn't yet exist on H Street. We shall discuss the topic again in a few years. So tell me, is there an H Street - U Street rivalry?

Interesting question from Washington Post Chat

I can't vouch for the validity but it is an interesting question. But I think the real important part is the last sentence of Mark Plotkin's reply: Will some candidates drop out of the race and unite behind another candidate? From what I've seen, I doubt that will happen.

Petworth: Mark -- I was out of town this weekend for a family
gathering. My uncle is a national labor bigwig and lives far away from
Washington He asked if I live in Ward 4; when I replied yes, he told
me that his umbrella organization is about to pump "a boatload" of
money into one of the candidate's coffers. He told me who their
candidate is and bragged that the money was coming "from all over." I
told him that I didn't like what they were doing and he replied that
their candidate didn't stand a chance unless they did this. It's
shameful what's happened to D.C. politics in the past four years. My
uncle lives hundreds of miles from Washington, and he has more say in
who my Council member is than I do.

Mark Plotkin: You can't stop people from trying to raise as much money
as possible and from as many sources as possible. Bowser who is
Fenty's candidate obviously believes that raising all this money will
eliminate any serious opposition. There could be a backlash to this.
There is still time as I said before for a candidate to emerge without
the same resources and some candidates might decide that they don't
have a chance and unite behind somebody who has a chance. The election
is May 1 so there is still time.

Alright, this house isn't technically in Petworth but I walked to it from my house. It is located in nearby Columbia Heights on 13th Street. You can see this house also has an amazing porch and in the upper right hand corner a roof deck. It has a nice rock out front too and come spring some really nice gardens.

I just wanted some 2% milk

I know this has been discussed by many but our bodegas leave a little to be desired. First and foremost, I understand but I despise the bullet proof glass that the cashiers work behind. It does not give one a pleasant feeling. And I know it is not a grocery store but damn can't I get some 2% milk? My choices were soda, beer or whole milk and that was my only choice. And damn if I don't pay premium for it too. But what do you do when you just need a few things and don't feel like going to the grocery store. Well, unfortunately in Petworth you get some whole milk and hope for the best. To make matters even worse right when I left the store across from the metro, I was offered drugs to buy. So we got that going for us. Damn it pisses me off. I responded in the most nerdy way that I was all set and didn't need any of the drugs (ed note: he used some slang that I never heard of) he offered. That is the first time in 4 years I've ever been offered drugs to buy. And right across from the metro too, where there are lots of kids. A damn sad state of affairs if you ask me.

Let's say you don't exactly have a green thumb, well, then you may want to copy what this one house did. They painted a flower box under some windows in their alley. It looks sweet and I suppose requires very little care. Speaking of life giving you lemons I'm off to the Thievery benefit concert tonight so stay tuned for some more posts tomorrow night.

On another note, I've really enjoyed the responses to last week's Friday question of the week. You should read the comments. I'm just curious, has anyone had candidates come to their house on a door to door campaign. I haven't had any yet and I'm a bit surprised not to see any candidates if they are trying to emulate Fenty's techniques.

If we of Ward 4 overwhelming elected Adrian Fenty for Mayor and apparently were tremendously satisfied with his job as our Ward 4 Councilmember than how come there is so much vitriol aimed against the candidate he endorsed -Muriel Bowser? If we like Fenty why don't we want someone who will support him on the council? I haven't decided who I am voting for yet, I'm just curious why there seems to be so much anger aimed at Muriel Bowser. I'd love to hear thoughts and please not just random bashing.

Why the hell are the communist er scratch that, socialist workers of America or something like that constantly outside of the Petworth metro hawking their literature? I don't see them outside the Dupont Circle metro or the Friendship Heights Metro or any other metro except the Petworth metro. Now, you guys are far smarter than I am. So please tell me. Is Petworth filled with Socialists? Now don't get me wrong I like the Socialists as much as the next guy, I am even quite fond of the Socialist French Presidential candidate so I don't really know what I am complaining about. I guess it is could be worse, how do you spell Lyndon LaRouche?

With all the excitement about El Limeno, which is fantastic by the by I forgot to mention another rather new Salvadorian/Mexican restaurant - El Torogoz. It has a very similar feel to El Limeno. It also has a fantastic juke box and excellent service. So if you have room in your stomaches and hearts don't forget to patronize El Torogoz as well, located right next to the Post office. Another bonus is that it is right around the corner from Domku so you can get in a game of pool after dinner.

What happened to me?

I used to be cool. I used to hit the bars every other night. I once held a record among my friends for going out three months in a row. 3 months! Now I follow open houses like I used to follow the Yankees. I get excited when I read that a grocery store may open up near my house. What happened? My friend got a new washer/dryer and I was legitimately excited. I even had envy. I wanted a new washer/dryer. A washer/dryer for the love of God. Embarrassing. Truly embarrassing.

In case you haven't realized it there is a ton of development/renovation/construction going on in Petworth. It is phenomenal and really does provide hope for the future. This is a picture of a block I found that had a whole row of houses being gutted. Must have been about 5 or 6 houses right next to each other completely gutted. I just hope they are reasonably priced so that they don't remain empty languishing on the market. On a related note that beautiful shell on the corner of Upshur and N.H. has not seen much progress. It actually looks like they just stopped working. I still have lots of hope for the future. It is very easy to imagine how amazing these blocks are going to look once the renovations are completed.

Little green bag

So I encountered a tiny green ziplock bag. Maybe 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch. This made me very sad. These are the bigger issues that haven't gone away no matter how many eatmore fried chicken's open up. I hate these little green bags!

I'm actually going to do something

Well, normally I feel much more comfortable bitching and complaining from a comfortable chair. I am, however, psyched when other people do things to improve the community. Well, I'm going to do my small part. Please join me in this gesture in what I am calling the war against garbage in Petworth or WAGIP. If you make an acronym you know it is serious. At any rate I have decided to carry an empty plastic bag with me on my walks to the metro every morning. I have gotten tired of carrying trash in my arms just from picking it up in front of my house. So it hit me, why not carry an empty plastic bag, from safeway or whatever, and fill it up on my walk to the metro. The beautiful thing is that it doesn't take a lot of effort. So if some of you loyal readers can do the same on your walks to work or metro or bus or wherever we can make Petworth shine like it should.

Perhaps many of you have seen this terrific sculpture just off Georgia and Upshur. Unfortunately the sign explaining what it is has deteriorated. From what I could tell it was some sort of tribal sculpture but I wish I knew what the whole sign said. It is pretty cool, no?

The king of the Washinton Post anoits Ward 4 council candidates?

Colbert I. King, Washington Post columnist plans to anoint 6 competitive Ward 4 council candidates. From his column on Saturday:

"Of the 17 candidates at the Ward 4 forum, six were quite competitive. Stay tuned."

Who will the lucky 6 be? Any guesses? Does he have the right to anoint 6 as competitive? Stay tuned...that's my line!

This restaurant which is freshly opened on Georgia Ave is perhaps one of the most beautiful sights this eye has seen. I'm not sure how healthy it is but damn it, it has the greatest name ever. I'm not exactly sure why the chicken is dancing but that is a topic for a different post.

Friday questions of the day

Recently I was at a dinner when an interesting topic came up: where is the north south dividing line of Petworth? Does Petworth end at Kennedy or Missouri? Is there a North-South Petworth rivalry?

A pretty common response was that the north-south divide exist at Grant Circle. Or perhaps north Petworth begins at the begining of 3 sylable streets ie Allison Street.

Well, I'm not sure of the answers but if there is a north-south Petworth rivalry I'd have to say South Petworth kicks ass!

If you have trouble renting shouldn't you go down in price?

I peruse the craigslist Petworth housing classifieds from time to time to see what's going on. I understand it may appear that I have way too much free time on my hands, I'd like to reassure you that...alright I have too much free time but I've been sick and haven't been able to go out so cut me some slack. Actually from the pictures the house looks pretty awesome. Notice she first calls it 16th Heights/Brightwood until Mar-1 when she changes it to 16th Street Heights/Petworth. Oh yeah, if you can't rent your house in Brightwood try Petworth. But wait a second isn't 9th and Longfellow in Petworth anyway? Remember when the realtors used to say "located in the hot Petworth neighborhood"? Do they still do that? Why does she raise her asking price from $800 to $1000? So if 9th and Longfellow is 16th Street Heights/Brightwood/Petworth then I live in Petworth/Columbia Heights/U Street. Sweet!

I was searching around flickr to see if anyone had posted some neat Petworth pictures when I came across this photo taken at the old soldier's home national cemetary on Memorial Day by "jdcdc".

Whatever our feelings are on the war we should remember those who are making the real sacrifices.
