Holy cow, I think I saw a hooker last night and a pimp too!

As I was walking back home from the metro I passed Quincy Street and saw what looked to be from straight out of a movie or bad 70s detective show. There was a woman walking who was dressed next to nothing, practically falling out, hard to explain but certainly not someone on an evening stroll. She was, I realized, a prostitute. It was as though a caricature of a prostitute was walking in front of me- barely any clothes, super high heels, etc. And I was shocked, not because it was a prostitute but because I had never seen one in Petworth before. Anyway, as I stare incredulously, I notice what I only assumed to be her pimp two steps behind her yelling at her. It wasn't screaming, more like controlled yelling. He didn't have a big fluffy hat nor goldfish in platform shoes but it was unmistakable. They kept walking at a very brisk pace east on Quincy. And I thought to myself, holy cow, that is a pimp. It was almost like seeing a celebrity in a weird way. I had never seen a pimp before. I had seen pimps on tv but never in real life. At this point I was expecting to hear the theme music from the tv show 'cops' come on, you know "bad boys, bad boys, what they gonna do...". Sorry, the point of this story is that I think I saw a prosititute and her pimp and despite my initial fascination it made me very sad. Is this a problem in Petworth? Forget the legal argument for a minute. Just focus on what clearly is a dangerous situation. Has anyone else seen this before? Or am I extremely naive?

I think I remember a 4D Sgt telling me a story about some brothels in on Randolph or Shepard or something like that. But they're around, but they're run out of regular ol' rowhouses.

And if the client list has the potential to shock and awe the public, it's called an "escort service"

There were prostitutes that worked out of the crack house on my block when I first moved to Petworth. The crack house was sold and the addicts and prostitutes had to move, but I still see the tall skinny prostitute around a lot, including last night around Georgia and Quincy. Maybe we had the same sighting.

If you read the arrest stats that the police send out every week or so, you'll notice there's quite a bit of prostitution in the area.

We've been kindly asking the pimps to move their protstitutes to Petworth because we're tired of seeing them downtown. The program we've started offers free bus fare, free condoms, lunch and a breath mint. Enjoy.

"Riding through the city on my bike all day
Cause the filth took away my license
It doesn't get me down and I feel OK
Cause the sights that I'm seeing are priceless

Everything seems to look as it should
But I wonder what goes on behind doors
A fella looking dapper, but he's sitting with a slapper
Then I see it's a pimp and his crack whore"

Right after we bought our house in Petworth (but before we moved) we were coming back from the Metro to our friends' house at about 1 PM on a Tuesday afternoon, and we saw two prostitutes standing on New Hampshire near Quincy, selling their wares, apparently. My first thought was "great, I can't believe we bought a house here" and then I was kind of surprised at how bold/stupid (depending on how you look at it) they were to be doing it in broad daylight about 3 blocks from the police substation.

We were just talking to some friends about two nights ago how we haven't seen any since. I guess we've just been lucky and only get to see the crazy people and petty drug dealers.

Last summer I got propositioned by a crack whore as I was taking my trash out in the alley b/w Illnois and 4th on Upshur. She just stood at the mouth of the alley, lifted up her skirt and asked if I saw anything I liked. Twice. I was too surprised to come up with anything other than "I'm just taking out my trash" before I ran back in the house. I haven't seen anything since.

There used to be a female who would get a drink at one of our local El Salvadorean restaurants. Without question, she was "working." Not sure if she still frequents (un)said establishment.

I've seen one in the early morning (I'm talking before 5 a.m.) around the Petworth Metro. (Also further south on Georgia, around the convention center.) I always thought working a Metro stop would be pretty tough. Morning commuters won't pause for a world-class violinist, much less a something-less-than-world-class hooker.

I have definitely seen some questionable women on the corners of GA ave. I find it funny that one person wrote how stupid these women had to be to do it in broad daylight. I dont' think MPD is going to do anything about crime that involves them leaving their vehicles.

First a link to the US Attorney's program on prostitution. Just in case, you know . . .

http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/dc/Community_Prosecution/Prostitution_Programs/index.html#johnschool

And secondly, in general for those interested, the court report. It's an interesting way to track all the crime from your area from major cases to all papered cases.

my apologies, looks like the links got cut short, but they still take you to the main page for Community Prosecution and you can get to the court report from there.

welcome to the "inner city"

Prostitution in Pethworth has been going on for years!!. I can honestly say that they are slowly disapearing though.

When you go for night out to a club or restaurant, make a point to drive around pethworth when you come back home. You will notice them.

I am really stunned. I have lived in Petworth for over 4 years and driven around and walked around all the time. I guess, I focus too much time looking at the houses and gardens...

The hookers are out all the time around 7th and Quincy Street. They and a few men come and go at all hours of the day and night through the back alley to 612 Quincy Street, which is boarded up in the front. I also see women hanging out at the NW corner of the intersection waiting for "friends" to come driving up Warder Street.

Last year, for a few weeks, I would see a prostitute walking up and down Taylor St between NH and Rock Creek Church Rd. Turns out that, at least at that time, there was a 'house of sin' on RCC and Shepherd (on RCC, two houses or so south of Shepherd). Haven't seen her or others for a while though.

The young woman I saw was white, not extravagant or particularly trashy looking. Even my wife was not convinced, 'maybe she's just coming to or from a party'. Indeed. The tipoff was how easy it seemed to be for dudes in passing cars to get her to come to the window, chat with them at stop signs... oh, and she seemed to be having an earnest conversation with a landscaper down the block.

It was galling and sort of shocking, but I admit sort of comical too. In a laugh-so-you-don't-cry kind of way.
