Are these trees offensive?

These are the cherry trees that were planted in the triangle park near Grant Circle. Check out the debate here on Petworth News and here by Wayan over at Metroblogging DC.

Anyone who is opposed to planting trees in the City is a card-carrying member of the Communist party and should be arrested as an enemy combatant.

i think they should have planted mighty oaks, portraying the strength and stamina of this once vibrant community, and it's will to return to vitality.

or maybe just some japanese maples.

and they planted far too few trees.

My block on varnum is nothing but oaks. We should diversify the tree population. For example, Ann Arbor, Michigan's trees are about 20% Ash trees, which are now going to disappear because of the newly imported Asian Ash something-or-other that is going to wipe out the entire ash tree population. Hooray for cherry trees and the like.

DC has very strict rules about what kind of trees kind be planted on which streets, which is why you'll notice streets planted only with ginko trees, for example.
