I look forward to seeing the strength of the City Paper's coattails on this one. Few had heard of Gaither before this article. My guess is that he gets 112 votes. Any one else want to enter the guessing game? I'll put M Bowser at 2,868; Singleton next at 743, Brown 3rd with 561.

That raises an interesting point. How many votes will be cast total. I would guess somewhere in the range of 5,000 total.

My guess is 10,000 votes cast with the winner getting 3,000. There will be a tremendous get out the vote effort. I've already been called by Muriel's campaign four times and she still has $175,000 left. Anyone who promises to vote for her can probably get a chauffeured limousine ride to the polling place. If you don't like robo-calls, I suggest leaving your phone off the hook on Tuesday.

I have a funny feeling there will be a high turn-out due to a strong push by each candidate to get his/her supporters to the polls. The candidates who have cash will use it supporters to the polls!

Dwight Singleton has been absent from 4 candidate's forums that I have attended. Forums aside, in a field of 19, several have made their presence known in the race, and he is not one of them.

Singleton probably figures that he has name recognition others lack, and competing for attention in a group of 19 with 50 to 100 onlookers may not be worth the effort.

He won the 1998 Ward 4 school board election with over 50% of the vote in a field of 7; number 2 had 28%.

He won the District 2 seat in 2000 with 31% in a field of 7; I don't know the Ward 4 percentage, but it was probably significantly higher.

In 2004, he came in second of 7 to Victor Reinoso in District 2 with 21%, but in Ward 4 he came in first with 40% to Reinoso's 26%.

In other words, as he pointed out in Tuesday's forum, he has won three elections in Ward 4 in the past ten years.

Singleton has name recognition for sure. When his name comes up, people talk about how he didn't do much as a school board member. He shouldn't rely on his name to win any electtions in Ward 4.

Speaking of turn-out, what are all of the candidates thinking by not at least having someone outside the Petworth metro at rush hour handing out literature? It's an incredibly wasted opportunity.

Anonymous may be right about the job Singleton did on the Board of Ed. But after six years of it, he still got 40% of the vote in Ward 4 among seven candidates. I had discounted him as a non-starter until that was pointed out to me.

But it certainly does not affect my intention to vote for Renee Bowser or Graylan Hagler.

I'm glad that the options aren't limited in this election because citizens deserve more than what we've been getting as overblown egos and personal sniping preside over council hearings, board hearings, ANC meetings, and the like.

Last night's ANC 4B meeting was a perfect example of egos run amok, as a perfectly legitimate issue was raised by a commissioner who was handily cut down by the chair.

I'm voting for Charles Gaither. I think the backlash against the two MB's is only getting stronger.
At every single candidate forum, the two MBs are greeted with a chant of "Ward 4 Is Not 4 Sale!"

I hope folks will join me in voting for Gaither!

From one anonymous to another Muriel Bowser has if you want the truth...NO YEARS of service, on the Lamond Riggs Citizens Assoc, the president will tell you he receives no help from her, on the Ward 4 Dems that president will give the same answer, on the ANC, she caused them to be audited, so that to me = no years of services and 2 years of titles only.

So, last night I saw one of the candidates (Doug Sloan) for Ward 4 council member campaigning and fund raising in Ward 1. This baffled me, and I was NOT happy with his explanation of why he was doing that. For someone who talks about how "Ward 4 is not for sale," it's fairly hypocritical, IMO. Any thoughts?

RC Page said...

What was his explanation for doing it?

Sarah said...

His explanation was that he had an invite from a friend who was doing an event there. This does not explain to me why a fundraising and campaign event in Ward 3 is in any way appropriate.

Sarah, we've got a long list of candidates who fundraise outside of their various wards in DC. I know Gaither held his 1st event in Ward 2, & Michael Brown & Muriel Bowser have both held numerous events outside of Ward 4. Some candidates have even gone out to Maryland to hold fundraisers. So to pick on him for an invite from a friend seems like you're arbitrarily targeting him for one reason or another.

Sarah, Muriel Bowser had a "private fundraiser that was not published for the public to know about in ward 3 at Ed Cohen's house, he is part owner of the nationals. Now why would he want to give a "private" fundraiser for muriel and he doesn't even know her....as a favor to the mayor...GOOD ANSWER. Now at this fundraiser there were only other developers invited, all men, no women...I know there has got to be some women who own development...but anyway all why was this one "private"?

Can anyone find and print the actual number of votes cast?

David, it is linked on my Congrats to Muriel Bowser post.
